In Luke 13:10–21, Jesus shocks a synagogue by healing a woman crippled for 18 years—on the Sabbath—igniting outrage from religious leaders and joy in the crowd. We often villainize the Pharisees, but their motive was preserving the law after Israel’s exile; the real danger is legalism that outweighs compassion. Jesus exposes the inconsistency: if you’ll untie an ox to give it water, shouldn’t a “daughter of Abraham” be set free?
